Company Description
The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) is a cabinet-level government ministry responsible for the sustainable development of tourism, wildlife conservation, and cultural heritage preservation in Uganda. Operating under the visionary slogan “Explore Uganda, the Pearl of Africa”, the ministry is tasked with converting the nation’s diverse ecological and cultural wealth into an economic engine. MTWA aims to increase tourist arrivals, generate foreign exchange earnings, create employment for youth, and protect natural assets for future generations.
The administrative scope of the ministry is driven by a mandate that covers three key sectors: Tourism Development, Wildlife Conservation, and Cultural Antiquities. The Tourism wing handles international marketing, quality assurance, and product diversification, pushing beyond traditional safaris into faith tourism, culinary arts, and eco-tourism. The Wildlife division oversees conservation policy and protected areas, while the Antiquities arm manages the documentation and safekeeping of historical landscapes, monuments, and cultural heritage sites like the Kasubi Tombs and Nyero Rock Paintings.
To carry out its extensive national and international mandate, MTWA works through several specialised semi-autonomous statutory agencies. Chief among these is the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which manages national parks and combats illegal poaching, and the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), which serves as the destination marketing arm. Additional key agencies include the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC / Entebbe Zoo) and the Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI) in Jinja, which builds professional capacity within the hospitality workforce.
Operationally, the ministry coordinates its policy implementations, international development partnerships, and sector funding frameworks from its headquarters at Plot 6, 2nd Floor, Rwenzori Towers on Nakasero Road in Kampala. The ministry works alongside global networks like the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the African Wildlife Foundation to execute multi-sector regional programs. By hosting annual flagship platforms like the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE), MTWA continues to strengthen Uganda’s position as a premier global competitive destination.
