Company Description
The Mukwano Group of Companies is one of the largest and most prominent private industrial conglomerates in East Africa, headquartered at Plot 30, Mukwano Road in Kampala, Uganda. Formally established in 1986 by the late leading industrialist Amirali Karmali (popularly known as Mzee Mukwano), the family-owned empire has deep historical roots dating back to the early 20th century. Today, it functions as a highly diversified corporate entity with extensive business operations spanning fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing, large-scale agriculture, cross-border logistics, and real estate development.
The primary manufacturing engine of the company handles the production of essential everyday household commodities widely utilized across the Great Lakes region. Its expansive FMCG portfolio includes vitamin-fortified cooking oils and baking fats like Roki and Sunseed, laundry soaps, cleaning powders such as Nomi, and Aqua Sipi bottled drinking water. Furthermore, under its trusted Eagle Rock Plastics division, the manufacturing branch processes industrial and household plastic items, alongside managing Dunia Recycling to systematically repurpose post-consumer plastic waste.
Beyond basic factory processing, Mukwano drives a vertically integrated agricultural contract farming network that supports rural economic development across northern and eastern Uganda. Since 2004, the group has collaborated directly with more than 135,000 smallholder cooperative farmers by supplying high-yielding hybrid seeds, extension services, and guaranteed local purchasing markets for sunflower and soybean crops. The harvested oilseeds are directly channeled into the group’s large-scale processing infrastructure, such as the Lira Oil Mill, to refine premium local cooking oil brands closer to the source
To support its distribution infrastructure, the conglomerate commands a massive supply chain network managed under its commercial transit wing, AK Transporters Uganda Limited, which deploys a fleet of over 200 light and heavy-duty trucks. In real estate and property development, the group’s investment arm has delivered high-profile landmarks in Kampala, including the upscale Acacia Mall in Kololo, Mukwano Courts on Buganda Road, and multiple retail commercial arcades. Through these tightly connected networks, Mukwano remains an essential economic anchor in Uganda, directly employing thousands of individuals and driving regional trade competitiveness.
