Company Description

The National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) is an indigenous umbrella NGO formed on November 14, 1987, to unite all categories of disabilities across the country and champion their rights. Operating under the philosophy “Nothing for us without us” and “Disability is not inability,” the organization seeks to shift societal views away from treating persons with disabilities as mere objects of charity. Headquartered in Kampala, it serves as a collective voice for individuals with physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental impairments.
The core mandate of NUDIPU is driven by a vision of achieving a just and fair society where persons with disabilities live prosperous, dignified lives. It operates through an extensive membership network comprising numerous district unions and national disabled people’s organizations. By coordinating these regional and local entities, the organization ensures that grassroots challenges are effectively brought to the attention of national policymakers and development partners.
Strategic interventions by NUDIPU focus heavily on inclusive policy advocacy, socio-economic empowerment, and capacity building. The organization actively lobbies for the proper implementation and monitoring of disability-inclusive laws, such as the Persons with Disabilities Act. Furthermore, it promotes equitable access to vital public services including education, health care, and employment, while tackling poverty via targeted economic initiatives like savings groups and vocational training.
