Company Description

Onfon Mobile Limited is a fast-growing financial technology and device financing enterprise established in 2022 to drive digital inclusion across Africa. Operating as a specialized subsidiary of the prominent Kenyan telecommunications giant Onfon Group, the company bridges the digital divide by placing modern technology directly into the hands of under-resourced populations who rely on smartphones for transport, healthcare, mobile banking, and communication. While headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the regional firm operates an active subsidiary, Onfon Mobile Uganda, with corporate operational offices located at Plot 17 Faraday Road in Bugolobi, Kampala
The core operating infrastructure of the enterprise revolves around an innovative “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) credit system designed for individuals who cannot afford standard upfront device costs. Under this framework, consumers can acquire ownership and immediate possession of a high-quality smartphone by providing a low, flexible initial cash deposit. The remaining principal is systematically split into affordable daily, weekly, or monthly micro-installments spread over an extended repayment period, allowing informal sector traders, delivery workers, and low-income earners to build personal equity.
To secure its credit assets and maintain high repayment compliance without relying on heavy physical collateral, Onfon Mobile integrates advanced proprietary remote device-locking technology into its financed smartphones. When a borrower signs the initial financing agreement, the handset is issued in a remotely restricted state that automatically unlocks upon verification of incoming installment payments. In the event of a default or missed payment, the company’s automated system instantly locks the handset from a remote location, restricting all user access except for emergency services and payment portal interactions. Once the loan is fully settled, the locking script permanently self-deletes, transferring uninhibited smartphone ownership to the consumer.
Strategically, the fintech firm has experienced exponential geographic expansion across Sub-Saharan Africa under a broader vision to upscale the continent’s digital landscape. Alongside its networks in Kampala and Nairobi, Onfon Mobile has established active operational hubs in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Maputo (Mozambique), Lagos (Nigeria), and Cameroon. These multi-country expansions are powered by high-profile corporate partnerships with leading telecom operators, including Safaricom, Vodacom, and MTN. By combining its robust digital lending rails with an expansive regional footprint, the company continues to foster long-term socio-economic mobility for millions of unbanked citizens
