Company Description
Peace Corps Uganda is an international service and grassroots development program operated by the United States government at the invitation of the Government of Uganda. Established locally in November 1964 with an initial cohort of 35 secondary education teachers, the agency has deployed nearly 2,000 American volunteers over more than 60 years. The organization coordinates its countrywide field logistics, partnerships, and training operations from its national headquarters located at 48 Malcolm X Avenue in Kololo, Kampala.
The primary operational mandate of the agency centers on delivering sustainable capacity building, community development, and deep cultural exchange. Operating under formal memorandums of understanding with various national line ministries, volunteers are deployed for two-year terms directly into rural, semi-urban, and underserved communities. To ensure smooth integration and authentic person-to-person diplomacy, all incoming personnel complete extensive cultural training, living with Ugandan host families and learning local languages such as Luganda, Lusoga, Ateso, Lango, and Dhophadola.
The institution directs its field interventions through four core sectors: Agriculture, Community Economic Development, Education, and Health. In primary schools, volunteers serve as School Enrichment Facilitators focusing on literacy and gender-equitable practices, while Agribusiness advisors assist local cooperatives with post-harvest management and financial literacy. In the public health sector, Community Health Promoters collaborate with rural clinics and village health teams to address malaria education, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS support
