Company Description
PEAS Uganda (Promoting Equality in African Schools) is a prominent non-profit social enterprise dedicated to expanding access to affordable, high-quality secondary education in underserved communities. Established locally in 2008 as the pioneering country office of the UK-headquartered global network, the organization operates with a clear social mission. It constructs and manages low-cost, inclusive schools specifically positioned in hard-to-reach, rural areas where geographical and financial barriers historically prevent children from continuing their studies past the primary level.
The organization runs a vast network of 30 secondary schools across the country, making it one of the largest non-government secondary education networks in the region. The institutional model utilizes a unique cost-sharing and sustainable infrastructure approach, funding its campuses through government subsidies, minor tuition payments, and school-based agricultural income. To correct deep-seated gender disparities, the enterprise strictly reserves at least half of its enrollment capacity for girls, an initiative that has seen female students outperforming their regional peers in foundational subjects.
Since 2019, the organization has aggressively scaled up its systemic impact by entering into a formal nationwide partnership with the Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports. Moving beyond its original mandate of simply running private schools, the entity now works hand-in-hand with state regulators to share its 17 years of management and academic expertise. This systems-change initiative focuses heavily on equipping state school heads and administrators with the specialized instructional leadership skills required to transform ineffective teaching practices and eradicate unsafe learning environments.
The primary pillars of educational delivery, regional campus networks, and performance metrics managed by the social enterprise include:
- Three Pillars of Impact: Builds all institutional framework decisions on the core pillars of access, educational quality, and financial sustainability.
- Value-Add Performance Metric: Secures competitive placements on national rankings, with top locations like Toroma PEAS High School, Apeulai High School, and Kityerera High School leading academic progress metrics.
- Practical Core Curriculum: Teaches standard national subjects alongside mandatory technical life skills, including entrepreneurship, modern citizenship, and community agriculture.
- Systems Transformation Scale: upports hundreds of rural partner schools, directly improving learning outcomes and enrollment safety for nearly half a million students.
- Strategic Corporate Alliances: Cooperates with major telecom foundations like the MTN Foundation and international funding organizations to expand student facilities.
