Company Description
Planet Gold Uganda is a national initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the Ugandan government. The project is part of a global program aimed at making the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector safer, cleaner, and more profitable. By addressing the significant environmental and health risks associated with informal mining, the initiative seeks to transition miners away from the use of hazardous chemicals, particularly mercury, which is commonly used to extract gold from ore.
The program operates through a multi-faceted approach that includes technical assistance, formalization of mining operations, and improved access to formal markets and finance. In Uganda, Planet Gold works closely with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to help artisanal miners secure legal mining leases and access to cleaner, mercury-free processing technologies. By formalizing these small-scale operations, the project helps miners move out of the informal economy, ensuring they receive fairer prices for their gold while adhering to international environmental and labor standards.
Beyond technical upgrades, Planet Gold Uganda emphasizes the social and economic empowerment of mining communities, with a specific focus on the role of women in the sector. The initiative provides training on financial literacy, occupational safety, and sustainable mining practices to ensure that the wealth generated from gold mining stays within the local communities. Through its “Gold Plus” standard, the project creates a traceable supply chain that appeals to international buyers who prioritize responsibly sourced minerals, thereby boosting Uganda’s reputation in the global gold trade.
