Company Description
The Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) is a member-based, not-for-profit National Research and Education Network (NREN) established in 2006. Its primary goal is to uplift the quality of research and education by providing high-speed internet connectivity and affordable ICT solutions to a community of universities, schools, research organizations, and health facilities. As a community-driven organization, it facilitates national development by overcoming high costs of information exchange and enabling seamless collaboration among its members both nationally and globally.
RENU offers a wide range of specialized digital services beyond basic internet connectivity to meet the unique needs of its members. These include eduroam, which allows users to access secure wireless roaming across multiple locations, and RENU Cloud for offsite data storage and disaster recovery. The network also provides advanced tools such as anti-plagiarism software, identity federation for secure resource sharing, and web conferencing services. To ensure technical sustainability, the organization runs a capacity-building program that trains network and systems engineers at member institutions to manage and maintain their own local networks.
The organization’s impact is felt through its dedication to bridging the digital divide and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Uganda. By 2020, RENU had established a presence in all regions of the country, connecting hundreds of campuses and millions of students to reliable digital resources. Key initiatives like “Metro eduroam” were launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to support remote learning by extending secure connectivity to public spots outside of campuses. Furthermore, RENU has expanded its reach to include special needs schools and offers zero-rated mobile access to ensure that students can access educational portals without incurring high data costs.
