Company Description
The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a wholly government-owned public limited liability company responsible for the state’s large-scale electricity generation assets. Incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act and the Electricity Act, the state agency was established to assume the generation functions of the defunct Uganda Electricity Board (UEB). The corporate headquarters are located at Block C, Victoria Office Park, Plot 6-9 Okot Close in Bukoto, Kampala, with an operational branch operating in Jinja.
The primary mandate of the parastatal is to establish, acquire, operate, and maintain electricity generation facilities to ensure safe and reliable power across the nation. Its expansive generation portfolio features key national assets, including the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant, the 183 MW Isimba Hydropower Plant, and the historical 380 MW Kiira-Nalubaale Power Complex in Jinja. Additionally, according to the UEGCL Official Website, the agency manages the 50 MW Namanve Thermal Power Plant and the 6.6 MW Nyagak III Hydropower Plant to feed the national grid.
Operationally, the entity answers directly to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and operates under strict regulatory oversight from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA). The company’s technical management team is led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eng. Harrison E. Mutikanga, who coordinates day-to-day capital investments and infrastructure re-engineering. To guide long-term strategy, the Minister of State for Energy appointed a new Board of Directors in July 2026, chaired by Dr. Eng. Florence Lubwama Kiyimba.
