Company Description
Cricket in Uganda is governed by the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA), which oversees the development of the sport from the grassroots level to the international stage. The game has a long history in the country, dating back to the colonial era, but it has seen a significant surge in popularity and professionalization over the last two decades. Uganda is an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and has consistently been one of the top-performing cricketing nations in Africa, frequently competing in high-stakes regional tournaments and global qualifiers to elevate its standing in the world rankings.
The national men’s team, popularly known as the Cricket Cranes, achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, marking their debut on the global grand stage. This achievement followed years of consistent performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League and various T20 regional finals. Similarly, the women’s national team, the Victoria Pearls, has been a dominant force in African cricket, winning multiple continental trophies and significantly improving their global ranking through dedicated high-performance programs and increased participation in international bilateral series.
Beyond international competition, the Uganda Cricket Association manages a robust domestic structure that includes the National Cricket League, the schools’ cricket week, and various youth development initiatives. These programs are vital for scouting talent from traditional cricketing hubs like Jinja, Entebbe, and Soroti, ensuring a steady pipeline of players for the national teams. The association also focuses on infrastructure development, maintaining key grounds such as the Lugogo Cricket Oval and Kyambogo Oval, while working to expand the sport’s reach to more rural areas to make cricket a truly national sport in Uganda.
