Company Description
The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is a corporate government parastatal operating under the Ministry of Works and Transport to construct, operate, and maintain national rail, marine, and road transit services. Established by the URC Act (Cap 331) following the 1977 collapse of the East African Railways Corporation, it has spent decades anchoring the country’s bulk logistical frameworks. The agency coordinates its nationwide freight and transit systems from its central corporate headquarters on Plot 57 Nasser Road in Nakasero, Kampala.
The corporation provides multi-modal freight logistics solutions for exports, imports, and regional distribution. Cargo operations link the port of Mombasa to Kampala via the Malaba border point along the Northern Corridor. Furthermore, URC manages key marine transport services over Lake Victoria, using state-backed container vessels like MV Kaawa and MV Pamba to ferry roll-on/roll-off cargo between Port Bell, Jinja Pier, Kisumu (Kenya), and Mwanza (Tanzania). Heavy repairs and structural overhauls of locomotives, tanktainers, and rolling wagons are handled at its specialized Nalukolongo Railway Workshop along the Kampala–Masaka road axis.
To buffer metropolitan commuters against severe urban traffic congestion, the entity runs high-volume passenger services. Its commuter trains operate multiple weekday trips across core corridors connecting the central business district to peripheral municipalities like Mukono and Namanve. The commuter service utilizes scheduled drop-offs at active secondary stations including Nakawa (MUBS), Spedag (Zone 4), Kireka, and Namboole. This passenger network provides affordable transit fares that significantly lower the daily transport burden for thousands of low-income workers and students.
Uganda Railways Corporation is executing a massive infrastructural overhaul backed by a $298 million funding injection from the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the East African Railway Rehabilitation Project. Key active projects include replacing old routes with concrete sleepers like the Kampala–Mukono line, reviving the Tororo–Gulu link to feed the new Gulu Logistics Hub, and installing automated barrier boom gates at high-risk road level crossings in Kampala and Wakiso. Strategically, URC is partnering directly with Tanzania Railways Corporation to expand cross-border transport capacity to seamlessly handle large passenger volumes ahead of the upcoming AFCON 2027 tournament.
