The Uganda Health Professions Assessment Board (UHPAB) is a specialized government body established to ensure that health professionals in Uganda meet the required standards of competence before entering the workforce. It operates under the Ministry of Education and Sports and is specifically tasked with the national assessment and examination of students enrolled in various health training institutions across the country. The board’s primary goal is to maintain the quality and integrity of health education, ensuring that those who graduate are capable of providing safe and effective medical services to the public.
The board’s mandate covers a wide array of health disciplines, including nursing, midwifery, clinical medicine, pharmacy, and laboratory technology, among others. UHPAB is responsible for designing the curriculum guidelines, setting standardized national examinations, and overseeing the practical and theoretical assessments that lead to professional certification. By centralizing these assessments, the board prevents discrepancies in the quality of training provided by different private and public institutions, thereby harmonizing the skills of health workers nationwide.
In addition to conducting examinations, the Uganda Health Professions Assessment Board works closely with various professional regulatory councils, such as the Nurses and Midwives Council and the Allied Health Professionals Council. Once a student successfully passes the UHPAB assessments, they are eligible for registration and licensing by these respective bodies. This collaborative framework ensures that the transition from a student to a practicing professional is rigorous and governed by high ethical and technical standards, which is critical for the overall strength of Uganda’s healthcare system.
