Company Description

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is the statutory government agency responsible for standardization, quality assurance, metrology, and laboratory testing in Uganda. Formed on July 1, 1989, under the UNBS Act Cap 327, the parastatal body operates under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives. Governed by the National Standards Council and led by Executive Director Eng. James Kasigwa, the bureau executes its nationwide regulatory mandate from its centralized corporate headquarters situated at Plot 2-12, Bypass Link in the Bweyogerere Industrial and Business Park, Kampala. 
The primary mandate of the bureau focuses on enhancing the global competitiveness of local industries, maximizing consumer safety, and facilitating fair commercial trade. By developing and enforcing strict Uganda Standards (US), the entity systematically protects public health and the environment from dangerous, counterfeit, or substandard commodities. Functioning as an active member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), and the East African Community (EAC), the corporation actively harmonizes national testing protocols with international quality baselines. 
To streamline service delivery for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the regulatory body has digitized its application channels, allowing businesses to secure product certifications online via the Certification Information Management System (CIMS). Furthermore, the agency operates a robust field network that executes aggressive market surveillance audits, factory inspections, and border point entry clearances.
