Company Description
The Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO) is a leading national non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for orphans and vulnerable children across Uganda. Founded in 1986 by First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni alongside a group of concerned Ugandan mothers, the organization was established to provide relief and hope to children left parentless by the dual tragedies of civil war and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Since its inception, it has transitioned from a basic relief agency into a comprehensive development organization that empowers families and communities to care for their children sustainably.
The organization operates through a holistic model that addresses the root causes of child vulnerability, primarily focusing on poverty and lack of education. One of its flagship projects is the Masulita Children’s Village, which serves as a sanctuary and a vocational training center for former street children and those without family support. By providing these children with both emotional healing and practical skills in areas like agriculture, tailoring, and mechanics, UWESO ensures that they are equipped to lead independent and productive lives once they transition back into society.
A critical component of UWESO’s success is its focus on the economic empowerment of caregivers, particularly women, through the establishment of Village Savings and Loan Associations. By encouraging a culture of saving and providing small business grants, the organization helps families become financially stable enough to provide for their children’s nutritional and educational needs without external aid. This community-based approach ensures that the impact of their work is long-lasting, as it strengthens the very social fabric that protects and nurtures Uganda’s youngest and most vulnerable citizens.
- Child Protection and Welfare: Providing alternative care, psychosocial support, and legal advocacy for children living in extremely difficult circumstances.
- Education and Skills Training: Supporting formal schooling for orphans and providing hands-on vocational training through the Migyera UWESO Training Institute.
- Socio-Economic Empowerment: Facilitating community savings groups and providing business mentorship to caregivers to ensure households can self-fund their children’s needs.
- Health and Nutrition: Implementing programs that focus on adolescent health, food security for vulnerable households, and support for children living with HIV/AIDS.
- Institutional Strengthening: Collaborating with local government and international partners like UNICEF to influence national child protection policies and standards.
