Company Description

Wagagai Mining (U) Limited (WGG) is Uganda’s first fully automated large-scale gold mining enterprise, located in the eastern border district of Busia. Established as a major milestone for the country’s mineral sector, the company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of China’s Liaoning Hongda Enterprise Group. Officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in August 2025, the massive project represents a strategic shift toward local mineral value addition and resource processing within East Africa
The industrial facility features highly advanced production infrastructure designed to handle the entire gold lifecycle from raw extraction to pure bullion output. The company operates a 5,000-tonne-per-day ore concentrator, a 350-tonne-per-day cyanidation plant, a fully automated underground mine, and an on-site gold smelting and refining workshop. Backed by modern automated mechanical engineering, the refinery is built to achieve 99.9% gold purity locally, yielding roughly 1.2 metric tonnes of refined gold annually from its extensive multi-million tonne ore reserves
Beyond technical processing, the mining enterprise serves as a vital economic engine projected to create over 5,000 local jobs once its construction phases reach full operational capacity. By prioritizing automated container terminals, precise assay laboratories, and strict environmental safety standards, the company helps eliminate the wasteful export of raw, unprocessed mineral wealth. The large-scale project heavily enhances Uganda’s foreign exchange earnings, promotes technical skill transfers, and integrates regional small-scale and artisanal miners into the official value chain
