Job Description

The Associate Consultant in Pathology provides specialist diagnostic services through the examination and interpretation of tissue samples, body fluids, cells and other clinical specimens. Pathology supports the diagnosis of diseases, helps determine the nature and extent of illness, and provides information that clinicians use to select appropriate treatment. Depending on the pathology service and facility, the work includes reviewing laboratory findings, interpreting pathological specimens and preparing accurate diagnostic reports for the clinicians responsible for patient care.

The specialist supports the implementation of clinical standards and guidelines, provides technical guidance to laboratory teams and works with other medical professionals to investigate complex or unusual cases. Responsibilities also include reviewing diagnostic results, supporting quality assurance, mentoring junior medical and laboratory personnel, and participating in clinical discussions, teaching and research. In services that include forensic pathology, the work can also involve post-mortem examinations and the provision of medical evidence in accordance with the service’s mandate.

The role contributes to accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment decisions and the monitoring of disease. Reliable pathology services help clinicians identify conditions such as cancers, infections and tissue abnormalities, while supporting clinical audits and medical research. The Associate Consultant therefore strengthens the diagnostic capacity of health facilities and helps ensure that medical decisions are based on dependable laboratory and pathological evidence
