Baristas are responsible for preparing and serving coffee, tea and other beverages in cafés, restaurants, hotels and other hospitality establishments. They operate coffee machines, grind coffee beans, prepare espresso-based drinks and ensure beverages meet customer preferences and quality standards.
Bartenders prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including cocktails, juices and other drinks. Their duties include taking beverage orders, mixing and serving drinks, maintaining bar cleanliness, managing supplies and providing professional customer service.
The apprenticeship equips participants with practical beverage preparation, equipment handling, presentation and customer service skills. They gain experience in coffee preparation, bar operations and beverage service, preparing them for employment in cafés, hotels, restaurants and bars.
About the Programme
The Government of Uganda (GoU), through the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), is in the fourth year of implementing the National Apprenticeship Programme in the tourism and hospitality sector.
The programme is aimed at equipping unemployed graduates with work readiness skills along the tourism value chain by promoting employment-based skilling, reskilling and upskilling, in line with the Fourth National Development Plan (NDPIV), the Uganda National Apprenticeship Framework (UNAF 2018), the Employment Act (2006), the Employment Regulations (2011) and the National Employment Policy of Uganda (2011). The programme is national in character, targeting interested individuals from across the country.
The Permanent Secretary, MTWA, invites suitably qualified Ugandans who satisfy the criteria to apply for a one-year on-the-job training opportunity leading to the award of a UVTAB Level II Certificate. The programme will commence in January 2027.
