Job Description
JOB TITLE: LEGAL MANAGER-LITIGATION & RECOVERIES
REPORTS TO
- Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary
JOB PURPOSE
- Safeguard the Bank’s interests through robust legal case management and representation in all legal disputes.
- Effective and efficient management of potential and ongoing debt collection litigations filed for and against the Bank.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / KEY DELIVERABLES
- Design litigation strategies for effectively representing the Bank in disputes.
- Coordinate with external advocates on Court pleadings and appear in Courts of Law as a Bank representative.
- Review pleadings and documentation required for the protection and enforcement of Bank interests.
- Ensure effective representation of the Bank in courts of judicature and tribunals.
- Draft pleadings and provide legal opinions to Management on the strengths and weaknesses of cases.
- Represent and defend the Bank in Courts of Law to safeguard its interests.
- Execute or ensure timely execution of legally binding documents.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on the performance and remuneration of external advocates.
- Prepare instructions for external lawyers and strategies for successful recovery of delinquent assets.
- Respond to notices of intention to sue to redress customers or enforce Bank rights.
- Manage cases involving defaulting debtors and pursue alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms.
- Oversee potential litigations and coordinate with cross-functional departments to resolve claims.
- Advise Senior Management and the Board on optimal options for resolving legal disputes.
- Pursue arbitration, mediation, or negotiation to resolve legal conflicts.
- Submit periodic reports on emerging legal risk trends and recommend mitigation strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Diploma in Legal Practice (LDC).
- Valid Practicing Certificate.
- 7 years’ work experience, with at least 4 years involving active litigation practice in Ugandan courts.
