Job Description
Background
Makerere University School of Public Health, in collaboration with Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, is implementing the Scaling the Optimal Use of Multiple ACTs to Prevent Antimalarial Drug Resistance (STOP-AMDR) Project. The project works closely with the Ministry of Health’s National Malaria Elimination Division and other stakeholders to generate evidence for introducing and scaling up multiple first-line therapies in Uganda. As part of this work, the project will conduct a molecular surveillance study to determine the prevalence and distribution of molecular markers of antimalarial drug resistance.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the day-to-day implementation of the molecular surveillance study across participating health facilities and ensure compliance with the study protocol, ethical requirements and standard operating procedures.
- Coordinate study activities across participating health facilities and track participant recruitment against study targets and timelines.
- Train and supervise study staff in enrolment, informed consent, data collection and sample handling.
- Ensure compliance with the study protocol, ethical requirements and standard operating procedures.
- Oversee the collection, labelling, storage, documentation and transport of dried blood spot samples while protecting their integrity and confidentiality.
- Ensure accurate and timely data collection, conduct quality checks and maintain study documents, regulatory files and logs.
- Coordinate communication among the Principal Investigator, study sites, laboratories, district health authorities and collaborating partners.
- Organise site visits and meetings, report operational challenges and prepare progress reports.
Qualifications and Desirable Qualities
- Minimum of a diploma in Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Laboratory Sciences or a related health sciences discipline.
- Experience coordinating health research, preferably in malaria, infectious diseases or field-based surveillance.
- Experience in participant enrolment, informed consent, data collection, sample management and study documentation.
- Strong organisational, supervisory, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple study sites.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic data-capture systems, with a strong commitment to data quality and confidentiality.
- Training in Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection.
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team, travel frequently to Buikwe and Busia districts and work flexibly.
