NEWS EDITOR – ARUA ONE FM

Position: NEWS EDITOR – ARUA ONE FM
Reports to: STATION MANAGER
Duty Station: Arua

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Deliver accurate, fair, balanced and timely competitive news to keep the audiences informed by:

• Assigning, briefing and debriefing reporters daily
• Verifying news content (script & sound byte) before it’s aired.
• Timely scheduling of the news line up.
• Sharing news items with other Vision Group platforms

Manage the general administration of the newsroom to ensure compliance and smooth work processes by:

• Holding daily editorial meetings and monthly newsroom review meetings
• Submit weekly newsroom report to the station manager(s)

Manage newsroom staff and freelance reporters to maintain a highly productive team by:

• Coaching and training
• Performance management (set targets & review)
• Handle grievance and discipline issues
• Identifying talent
• Develop Succession plan

Manage the day-to-day operations of the newsroom to ensure cost management by:

• Managing budget expenditure on reporter’s imprest
• Verifying and monitoring contributor’s pay
• Adhere to agreed Contributor Rates.

Support Producer of the daily evening news hour (Etuandruri) in order to give the audience a detailed recap of the best news stories for the day in 30 minutes by:

• Identifying the best national and international stories of the day and giving them for translations.
• Planning and liaising with reporters on the story direction to be delivered
• Conduct background chec

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication

WORKING EXPERIENCE

3 – 5 years in a newsroom management position in the radio industry

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Technical

1. Digital Publishing & CMS Mastery:

• Expert use of WordPress, keywords, and Google Trends / Google News optimization. Audience Analytics: Google Analytics 4.
• AI-assisted Workflow: Using AI for transcription (Otter, Pinpoint), draft summarization, fact-check assistance, and image generation – while verifying everything.

2. Multimedia Production:

• Mobile Journalism (MoJo): Shoot, edit video on phone – CapCut, Adobe Premiere Rush,
• Audio: Basic podcast editing – Audacity, Adobe Audition for news podcasts and radio cuts.
• Visuals: Photo selection and basic editing – Lightroom, Photoshop, Canva. Creating thumbnails, infographics, and social cards.
• Live & Short-form: Running Facebook Live, X Spaces, TikTok / Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts from the newsroom.

3. Social & Distribution Skills.

• Platform Management: Writing native copy for X, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp Channels, and LinkedIn – not just posting links.
• Community Management: Managing comments, verification, and fighting misinformation.
