Job Description

Job Summary: The Technician will support seed processing operations by providing technical assistance, ensuring operational efficiency, and maintaining compliance with quality standards, with a particular focus on hybrid maize seed processing and packaging

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement and execute seed processing schedules for hybrid maize and vegetable seeds to ensure timely, efficient, and high-quality operations
  • Perform seed cleaning, grading, and handling operations, ensuring all processed seed meets quality standards and generating accurate processing reports to support grower payments and traceability.
  • Set up, calibrate, and optimize processing equipment and machinery to improve operational efficiency, reduce defects, and minimize downtime.
  • Monitor seed treatment procedures to ensure proper application of chemicals and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Coordination of stock movement, including maize seed batches from processing to distribution.
  • Ensure varietal purity and prevent cross-contamination during processing, handling, and packaging operations.
  • Maintain accurate processing records, including seed lot information, production volumes, and operational parameters, board reports, for internal control and audit purposes.
  • Support quality control activities, including in-process checks and coordination with the Quality Assurance Officer and National Seed Certification Service for sampling and testing.
  • Assist in routine maintenance of processing equipment to ensure operational readiness and reduce the risk of breakdowns.
  • Ensure compliance with company Standard Operating Procedures and national seed certification requirements throughout the processing and packaging workflow.
  • Participate in capacity-building initiatives by supporting the training of processing staff on operational efficiency, quality standards, and safety procedures.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

  • Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, Processing Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Electrical Engineering or any related field.
  • At least 3 years of work experience, preferably in the seed industry.
  • Technical engineering skills with practical equipment exposure, especially in maize seed processing.
  • Ability to work in high-volume and highly paced environments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications (Ms Word and Excel)
  • Strong leadership skills and high levels of integrity.
