Job Description

The Systems Administrator will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the institution’s virtualization infrastructure, Linux-based systems, databases, and open-source educational platforms.

The role will primarily focus on managing enterprise environments using Proxmox VE, including virtual machines, LXC containers, clustering, high availability, live migrations, and Proxmox Backup Server.

The position will also oversee the deployment, configuration, maintenance, and performance optimization of key academic platforms, including Moodle, BigBlueButton, Koha ILS, and DSpace, ensuring reliable and secure services for teaching, learning, library, and research activities.

SUMMARY OF KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Virtualization & Infrastructure

  • Manage and maintain enterprise virtualization environments exclusively using Proxmox VE.
  • Provision and scale Proxmox Virtual Machines (KVM) and Linux Containers (LXC).
  • Configure clusters, high availability (HA), live migrations, and Proxmox Backup Server (PBS).
  • Monitor resource utilization across nodes to balance CPU, memory, and Ceph/ZFS storage allocation.

Open-Source & Educational Platforms

  • Deploy and manage LMS and repository systems, specifically Moodle, Koha ILS, and DSpace.
  • Configure and optimize BigBlueButton for high-performance web conferencing and virtual classrooms.
  • Perform regular updates, patch management, and version upgrades for all open-source applications.

Systems Administration

  • Administer Linux/Unix servers nested within Proxmox virtual environments.
  • Manage services, ensuring robust configuration of DHCP and DNS servers.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot outages, and implement proactive security measures.

Database Management

  • Maintain and optimize relational databases, such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, supporting core applications.
  • Implement backup strategies and disaster recovery plans to ensure absolute data integrity.
  • Write and refine SQL queries for troubleshooting and custom reporting needs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years in systems administration, most preferably within an academic setting.
  • Virtualization: Proven expertise managing Proxmox VE, LXC containers, and hypervisor clusters.
  • Platforms: Strong operational knowledge of Moodle, BigBlueButton, Koha, and DSpace.
  • Networking: Good understanding of core network protocols, specifically DNS and DHCP.
  • Databases: Strong working knowledge of open-source database administration.
  • Operating Systems: Advanced proficiency in Linux server administration, including Ubuntu, Debian, or CentOS.
