Job Description

Timber Plantation Program Manager

Location: Uganda

Commitment: Full-Time

Travel: As necessary

Reporting To: Chief Executive Officer

Start Date: Q3, 2026 (to be mutually agreed)

About the Role

The Timber Plantation Manager will provide operational and technical leadership for the establishment, management, and harvesting of timber plantations across designated forest zones in Uganda.

The role is responsible for overseeing two complementary planting programmes: native species plantations managed in close coordination with the Carbon Manager to generate and maintain verified carbon credits, and commercial timber species selected and managed in partnership with the Commercial Team to deliver sustainable, revenue-generating harvests.

The Timber Plantation Manager ensures that both planting programmes meet international silvicultural standards, comply with applicable carbon certification methodologies, and are executed within planned timelines and budgets across the full plantation horizon.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead assessment, preparation, and planting design in designated timber plantation areas.

2. Develop plantation establishment

3. Oversee nursery sourcing and seedling procurement for both native and commercial species.

4. Manage seasonal schedules to optimise survival rates and growth performance

5. Plan and implement planting programmes aligned with carbon certification methodologies

6. Work directly with the Carbon Manager to ensure planting data, survival rates, and biomass measurements are accurately captured for MRV (Monitoring, Reporting & Verification) purposes.

7. Apply species-appropriate silvicultural practices that maximise sequestration potential and biodiversity value.

8. Collaborate with the Commercial Team to select commercially viable timber species appropriate to Uganda’s soils, climate, and market demand (e.g., teak, mahogany, pine, eucalyptus, mvule)

9. Implement rotation management plans, thinning programmes, and pruning schedules

10. Monitor health, growth rates, and identify.

11. Provide technical input into forward contract timelines and harvest volume projections

12. Ensure all commercial harvesting operations comply with national forestry regulations

13. Manage field team including plantation technicians, nursery workers, and field supervisors

14. Develop standard operating procedures for planting, maintenance, monitoring, and harvesting.

15. Conduct regular field assessments to monitor plantation performance, survival rates, and ecological outcomes

16. Coordinate with Community Liaisons to integrate local communities into planting and maintenance activities where applicable

17. Advise on soil conservation, water management, pest and disease control, and climate adaptation measures

18. Produce periodic technical progress reports for internal management, investors, donors, and government stakeholders

Education & Certifications

1. PhD or Master’s degree in Forestry, Silviculture, Wood Science, Environmental Science, or a related field

2. Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in plantation forestry or timber management, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or management role

3. Demonstrated experience managing both native species restoration programmes and commercial timber plantations

4. Practical knowledge of silvicultural systems relevant to East African species and growing conditions

5. Familiarity with carbon project methodologies and MRV systems for forest carbon

6. Experience managing multi-disciplinary field teams and contractor relationships

Required Competencies

1. Deep technical knowledge of plantation silviculture, species selection, and forest ecology in Uganda and East Africa

2. Strong cross-functional collaboration skills

3. Ability to translate silvicultural science into practical field guidelines for varied skill-level teams

4. Understanding of timber market, product quality requirements, and harvest value drivers

5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in adaptive field management

6. Commitment to sustainability, responsible land use, and community inclusion

7. Excellent written and verbal communication in English

8. Luganda or other Ugandan languages an advantage
