Job Description
Job Title: Legal Officer – Center for Food & Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT)
Reports To
Head of Social Justice and Strategic Litigation Program
Job Purpose
To provide legal support (advisory, research, and litigation) across the organizational domains of Food Security, Food Safety, and Food Sovereignty, and support strategic litigation, legal research, and policy advocacy to advance economic rights, the right to food, nutrition, and public health.
Scope
- Conduct strategic public interest and pro-bono litigation for communities on adequate living rights, particularly land rights and agroecology
- Conduct legal research and advocacy to prevent diet-related non-communicable diseases
- Litigate against unfair trade laws in agri-food frameworks at national, regional, and international levels
- Promote legal empowerment, policy advocacy, and social accountability
- Advance a human rights-based approach to food, nutrition, trade, and investment systems
- Provide legal advisory and conduct legal action research on economic rights, food, nutrition, and health rights
- Support litigation and legal redress for violations of economic and food rights
- Promote social accountability and legal empowerment among duty bearers and rights holders
Key Result Areas
- Coordinate with and assist the Head of Litigation Program to ensure efficient judicial support services
- Act as focal point on judicial support services including interpretation, translation, transcription, AV recordings, and trial management issues
- Attend court hearings and provide secretariat support to legal teams
- Assist in formulation of internal policies and directives for the litigation program
- Manage litigation content on the organization website
- Advise the Communications department on litigation and right to food issues
- Provide legal advice to vulnerable community groups on food, nutrition, public health law, and economic rights
- Assist in drafting periodic litigation reports
- Support legal research, advisory, and litigation activities and ensure availability of resources to litigation teams
- Contribute to development, design, and planning of litigation projects
- Develop and implement food industry monitoring strategies
- Monitor and support the organization in countering food industry interference
- Draft pleadings and ensure timely submission and service of court documents
Key Performance Indicators
- Adequate petitions and affidavits with proper documentation and safe custody
- Follow-up plan for court proceedings and communications
- Communication plan for litigation program activities
- Plan of activities on legal empowerment and advisory services to vulnerable groups and stakeholders
- Plan of activities on legal policy advocacy and social accountability
- Draft and submit periodic food industry monitoring reports

Education
- At least a first-level university degree in Law from a recognized University
Work Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in law, litigation, legal analysis, research, and writing
- Prior experience in supporting court management services is desirable
- Prior experience in human rights, public health law, and policy advocacy is highly desirable
