Company Description
African Women and Youth Action for Development (AWYAD) is a women-led, national non-governmental organization founded in Uganda in 2010. It functions as both a humanitarian and development agency, dedicated to protecting the rights and improving the lives of vulnerable women, youth, and children. Operating heavily in conflict-affected areas and refugee settlements, the organization bridges the gap between immediate emergency relief and long-term community development.
The organization places a heavy emphasis on protection, human rights, and psycho-social support. It actively establishes community structures to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, and child abuse. Through targeted mental health interventions, such as specialized stress management sessions, AWYAD helps refugees and local trauma survivors rebuild their psychological well-being.
Economic empowerment and livelihood sustainability form another core pillar of AWYAD’s community interventions. The NGO equips out-of-school youth and marginalized women with vocational skills, agricultural value-chain training, and financial literacy. By introducing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and micro-business grants, they help vulnerable households build stable, independent income streams.
Headquartered in Kampala, AWYAD drives impactful field projects by partnering with major international bodies, including the European Union, GIZ, and the United Nations. Their localized programs, such as sustainable agricultural initiatives in refugee settlements, ensure that emergency aid transitions into lasting community resilience.
