Job Purpose

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, supervising, maintaining, and improving electrical systems, installations, and equipment used in railway operations, workshops, stations, signalling support systems, buildings, and marine transport. The role ensures safe, reliable, efficient, and compliant electrical infrastructure that supports the delivery of quality railway and marine transport services.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

Electrical Systems Planning and Maintenance

  • Plan, supervise, and coordinate the installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical systems across the Corporation.
  • Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance programmes for electrical equipment and installations.
  • Inspect electrical installations in workshops, railway stations, marine facilities, office buildings, and other operational sites.
  • Monitor the performance of power supply systems, generators, transformers, switchgear, lighting systems, and electrical protection equipment.
  • Conduct condition assessments of electrical infrastructure and recommend rehabilitation, upgrades, or replacement.

Electrical Design and Project Implementation

  • Design, review, and approve electrical engineering drawings, layouts, and technical specifications for rehabilitation and new railway projects.
  • Prepare technical specifications for procurement of electrical equipment, materials, and engineering services.
  • Participate in planning, budgeting, and implementation of railway infrastructure development projects.
  • Coordinate testing, commissioning, and handover of new electrical installations.
  • Promote energy efficiency and adoption of modern electrical technologies across the Corporation.

Contract Management and Supervision

  • Supervise contractors undertaking electrical installation, maintenance, and rehabilitation works.
  • Inspect and certify completed electrical works to ensure compliance with required standards and specifications.
  • Supervise electrical technicians, artisans, and other assigned personnel to ensure quality service delivery.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of maintenance resources, tools, spare parts, and equipment.

Compliance, Safety, and Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with the Electricity Act, Occupational Safety and Health regulations, engineering standards, and Corporation policies.
  • Support implementation of quality management systems, environmental management initiatives, and occupational health and safety programmes.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and restoration of electrical services following equipment failures or operational breakdowns.
  • Investigate electrical failures, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive measures.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare engineering reports, maintenance reports, project progress reports, and technical assessments.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, equipment histories, and engineering documentation.
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform any other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

Academic Qualifications
The applicant should possess:

  • Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Membership of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE).

Added Advantage

  • Postgraduate qualification in:
    • Power Systems
    • Railway Engineering
    • Project Management
    • Maintenance Management
    • Or a related field.
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in electrical engineering, preferably within transport, railway, manufacturing, power utilities, or heavy industry.
  • Experience using engineering software such as AutoCAD and electrical design software is an added advantage.

  • Requires close collaboration with engineering teams, contractors, operations staff, procurement, and external service providers while ensuring strict compliance with engineering, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
