Position Summary

The Enrolled Midwife will provide safe, competent, and compassionate basic midwifery care to women and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period at Healing Grace Medical Center.

The role will work under the supervision of the Registered Midwife and Clinical Officer while providing excellent, Christ-centered customer care to every client. The successful candidate is expected to uphold the professional code of conduct for midwives established by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Client Care Responsibilities

  • Receive and welcome expectant mothers.
  • Assist with antenatal assessments, including vital signs, weight, and basic fetal monitoring.
  • Assist the Registered Midwife or Clinical Officer during labour and delivery.
  • Provide supportive care to mothers throughout the birthing process.
  • Provide basic postnatal care to mothers and newborns under supervision.
  • Monitor recovery and promptly report any concerns.
  • Assist with immediate newborn care, including keeping the baby warm, supporting breastfeeding initiation, and basic newborn checks.
  • Support family planning clinics by preparing clients and assisting with counselling and method provision under supervision.
  • Assist in recognizing signs of obstetric complications and emergencies.
  • Promptly alert the Registered Midwife or Clinical Officer when complications arise.
  • Support antenatal and postnatal education on nutrition, hygiene, immunization, and newborn care.
  • Assist with cervical cancer screening, HIV counselling and testing, and other maternal health services as directed.
  • Provide holistic physical, emotional, and spiritual support, including prayer where appropriate and welcomed.
  • Strictly follow infection prevention and control protocols during deliveries and clinical procedures.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and confidential antenatal, delivery, and postnatal records.
  • Assist with daily and weekly maternal health returns and statistics.
  • Monitor stocks of midwifery supplies, drugs, and delivery kits.
  • Report shortages and expiring items to senior staff.
  • Assist with the proper use, cleaning, sterilization, and safe storage of midwifery and delivery equipment.
  • Support the scheduling of antenatal, delivery, and postnatal appointments.
  • Ensure compliance with clinic policies, national health regulations, and data protection standards.
  • Assist in preparing the clinic environment and documentation for inspections, audits, and visits by health authorities or partners.

Customer Care & Client Experience

  • Welcome and attend to clients with warmth, respect, dignity, and patience.
  • Communicate clearly and kindly with mothers and families about pregnancy, labour, delivery, and postnatal care.
  • Maintain a calm and reassuring approach, particularly with anxious, distressed, or first-time mothers.
  • Respect clients’ birth preferences and cultural values wherever safely possible.
  • Help clients remain informed and involved in their care.
  • Manage client flow in antenatal, labour, and postnatal areas efficiently.
  • Listen to client and family concerns and refer complaints appropriately.
  • Protect client confidentiality and privacy, especially concerning HIV status and reproductive health information.
  • Follow up with mothers and newborns as directed after delivery or referral.
  • Demonstrate Christ-like compassion and encouragement in every client interaction.

Collaborative & Team Duties

  • Work closely with the Registered Midwife, Clinical Officer, nurses, laboratory technicians, and community health workers.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement discussions.
  • Learn from and work under the guidance of senior midwifery staff.
  • Engage respectfully with community health volunteers and partner organizations supporting maternal health outreach.
  • Participate in staff devotions, fellowships, and outreach initiatives.

Professional Development

  • Reflect on midwifery practice and pursue continuous personal and professional development.
  • Attend continuing nursing/midwifery education and relevant CNE/CME sessions.
  • Maintain up-to-date professional licensing and certification.
  • Stay informed about current midwifery practices and national maternal health guidelines.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Registered Midwife, Clinical Officer, or administration as required.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Certificate in Enrolled Midwifery from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of midwifery experience.
  • Experience in primary care, rural, or community health settings is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Antenatal care.
    • Intrapartum care.
    • Postnatal care.
    • Common maternal and newborn health concerns.
Technical Competencies
  • Proficiency in basic midwifery procedures.
  • Ability to monitor vital signs accurately.
  • Ability to provide supervised support during deliveries.
  • Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
  • Willingness to learn health information systems such as HMIS/DHIS2.
  • Sound knowledge of infection prevention and control.
  • Safe handling of medical and delivery supplies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong customer-care orientation.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and under supervision, including during emergencies and night shifts.
  • Basic computer literacy is an added advantage.
  • Ability to create a safe, dignified, and nurturing environment for mothers, newborns, and families.
