Chief Plant Engineer

Job Detail

Direct overall plant maintenance, utility infrastructure, equipment installation, and civil works to ensure optimal operational reliability and asset integrity.
Lead engineering reliability and safe technical execution across electrical, mechanical, and utility systems to minimize downtime and prevent operational risks.
Drive continuous improvement, maintenance planning, and utility efficiency while maintaining compliance with food safety, occupational safety, and statutory standards.

Direct all plant maintenance operations, utility systems including boilers, power, and chillers, capital equipment installations, and site civil works.
Inspect, diagnose, repair, and adjust factory machinery using manuals, technical drawings, measurements, and fault codes to eliminate root causes of failure.
Enforce rigorous isolation and safe work controls, including electrical, mechanical, pressure, thermal, working at height, and confined space safeguards before any intrusive work begins.
Verify safety guards, interlocks, alignment, calibration, and performance parameters prior to testing, energizing, or handing equipment back to operations.
Execute planned preventive and predictive maintenance schedules, monitoring vibration, temperature, leakage, and abnormal wear to intervene before breakdown occurs.
Plan and sequence engineering shutdowns, sourcing required spare parts, specialist technical support, labor, and tooling in advance of critical interventions.
Maintain accurate, traceable maintenance records, statutory logs, machine histories, shift handovers, and work orders within engineering digital systems.
Track engineering key performance indicators including downtime, repair costs, utility consumption, and safety compliance to implement practical corrective actions.

Industrial automation, PLC/HMI interface troubleshooting, and instrumentation control
Heavy machinery mechanical and electrical diagnostics, repair, and alignment
Utility infrastructure management encompassing industrial boilers, power distribution, and industrial chillers
Preventive and predictive maintenance planning and computerized maintenance management
Safe work execution, lockout tagout (LOTO), and regulatory environmental and safety compliance

Bachelor’s Degree, Higher Diploma, Ordinary or National Diploma, National or Craft Certificate, trade certificate, or recognized apprenticeship (including UBTEB and TVET pathways) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Industrial, Automation and Control, Instrumentation, Plant Maintenance, Mechanical Fitting, Welding and Fabrication, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Automotive, Water, Chemical Technology, Civil or Building Engineering, Plumbing, Marine Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) or Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), and possession of applicable statutory credentials such as ERA electrical installation permits or boiler operator certification.
