Company Description

Igongo Cultural Centre and Country Hotel is a premier cultural and historical tourism complex located in Western Uganda. Strategically situated 12 kilometres before Mbarara City along the primary Kampala–Mbarara–Masaka highway, the complex was established in 2003 by founder Apollo Karugaba and officially opened its museum branch in 2010. Operating under the theme of preserving regional heritage, it serves as a central gateway for travelers heading toward major southwestern safari destinations like Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks.
The cultural anchor of the property is the Eriijukiro Museum, recognized as the largest privately owned community museum in Western Uganda. The museum features an extensive collection of historical artifacts, traditional pottery, pre-colonial weaponry, and an illustrated hall of fame mapping the socio-political structures of the Ankole, Bakiga, and neighboring interlacustrine kingdoms. Directly adjacent lies the Itaramiro Cultural Village, which showcases recreated, full-scale traditional homesteads belonging to the pastoralist (Bariisa) and agrarian (Abahiingi) clans.
Directly overlooking the complex is the historical Biharwe Eclipse Monument, built to commemorate the pivotal 1520 AD solar eclipse that occurred during the historic expansionist invasions of the region. Visitors can embark on guided trekking tours up the hill to view the monument, enjoy panoramic views, and explore the manicured Mbuuro Gardens below, which feature massive, lifelike sculptures of historical figures and the famous long-horned Ankole cattle. The site also houses the Nkwanzi Craft and Bookshop, which stocks authentic traditional costumes, beaded jewelry, and literary works documenting Southwestern Ugandan history.
Complementing its educational wing, the property hosts a 4-star luxury country hotel and lifestyle resort. The hotel integrates modern amenities including executive guest rooms, the Humura Health Club & Spa, a swimming pool, and a specialized restaurant dedicated to traditional culinary arts. The restaurant offers a farm-to-table dining experience where guests can sample local Ankole delicacies, such as eshabwe (a savory ghee sauce made from cows’ milk), boiled organic beef, and traditional millet bread (karo) accompanied by locally brewed sorghum beverages
