Company Description

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is a massive infrastructure project designed to transport crude oil from Uganda’s Lake Albert oilfields to the international market. The pipeline will stretch 1,443 kilometers, starting from Kabaale in the Hoima District of Uganda and ending at the Chongoleani peninsula near Tanga Port in Tanzania. Once completed, it will be the longest heated crude oil pipeline in the world, a technical necessity because the Ugandan oil is waxy and requires a constant temperature of at least 50 degrees Celsius to remain fluid during transit.
The project is a joint venture involving the governments of Uganda and Tanzania, alongside international oil companies TotalEnergies and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). Proponents of the pipeline argue that it will be a major catalyst for economic growth in the East African region, generating thousands of jobs during construction and significantly increasing the national revenues of both host countries. The development includes the construction of pumping stations, a marine export terminal, and a high-tech fiber optic cable along the route to monitor safety and operational efficiency in real-time.
Environmental and social considerations have been a central part of the project’s planning and public debate. The pipeline route was designed to minimize impact on protected areas and water sources, such as the Lake Victoria basin, while a comprehensive resettlement action plan was implemented to compensate and support project-affected persons. To address climate concerns, the developers have committed to using renewable energy, such as solar farms, to power several of the pumping stations. These efforts aim to balance the urgent need for regional industrialization and energy security with international environmental standards and local community livelihoods.
