Company Description
Ecobank was founded with a clear mandate to advance economic integration and financial development across sub-Saharan Africa. The Group commenced operations in October 1985 with the establishment of its first affiliate in Togo. From inception, the institution positioned itself as a pan-African bank designed to bridge financial gaps and facilitate cross-border trade and investment within the continent.
Despite the political and economic instability that characterised parts of Africa in the 1980s, Ecobank pursued an ambitious expansion strategy. By 1988, it had established a footprint in five African countries. Between 1997 and 2001, the Group accelerated its regional growth, increasing its presence from five to twelve countries, thereby strengthening its role as a regional financial intermediary.
Today, Ecobank operates in 35 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, making it one of the largest pan-African banking networks. The Group provides corporate, commercial, retail, and investment banking services, supporting governments, businesses, and individuals. With its integrated cross-border platform and strong regional identity, Ecobank has become synonymous with banking across Africa, promoting intra-African trade, financial inclusion, and sustainable economic growth.
