Company Description
Horyal Investment Holding Company Limited is a prominent private investment firm based in Kampala, Uganda, founded and led by celebrated entrepreneur Dr. Amina Moghe Hersi. Established as an umbrella for a diverse multi-million-dollar portfolio, the firm manages significant assets across real estate, agriculture, infrastructure, and commercial retail. The company’s strategic ventures have played a transformative role in shaping both the urban landscape of Uganda’s capital and the industrial capabilities of its post-conflict regions.
The firm’s flagship venture is the Atiak Sugar Factory, a massive greenfield agricultural development located in Amuru District, Northern Uganda. Commissioned to revitalize an economy previously hindered by regional conflict, the factory was designed with an initial processing capacity of 1,650 tonnes of raw sugarcane daily, with long-term infrastructure in place for phased expansions. This industrial hub serves as a cornerstone for agricultural manufacturing, focusing on producing powder sugar alongside commercial by-products like molasses and ethanol.
To finance and scale its agro-industrial operations, Horyal Investment entered into a significant public-private partnership with the Ugandan government through the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC). The government has injected over 550 billion Ugandan shillings in joint equity, shareholder loans, and agricultural subsidies over the years to sustain the project. While Horyal Investments retains the majority ownership, this financial collaboration has steadily built up the government’s equity stake to over 40%, helping co-fund recent modernization, mechanization, and pipeline irrigation initiatives.
Beyond its agricultural portfolio, Horyal’s urban real estate assets include major city landmarks such as the Oasis Shopping Mall and the Laburnam Courts Apartments in central Kampala. A core priority across all of Horyal’s investments is localized socio-economic empowerment. By integrating upwards of 15,000 local sugarcane out-growers—particularly vulnerable women organized through regional entrepreneur networks—into its primary supply chains, the company creates sustainable job opportunities and fosters community wealth in East Africa.
