NASECO Seeds Limited, formally known as Nalweyo Seed Company, is Uganda’s first privately owned agricultural seed enterprise. Established in 1996, the company operates its corporate office on Entebbe Road in Kampala, while maintaining extensive production and processing operations based in the Hoima district of Western Uganda. Over the past three decades, NASECO has evolved into one of the largest and most influential seed providers in the Great Lakes region, dedicated to sustainably enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through enhanced crop productivity.
The company operates a fully integrated seed value chain that encompasses breeding, product development, processing, and distribution. Its research division prioritizes climate-smart agriculture by integrating local feedback to engineer traits like drought tolerance and pest resistance against threats such as the fall armyworm. To maintain genetic purity, high germination rates, and early crop vigor, NASECO processes its seeds at a state-of-the-art facility before distributing them through an innovative network of regional Product Placement Officers.
Beyond its commercial functions, NASECO serves as a vital pillar for regional agricultural development and community support. The enterprise collaborates with a network of hundreds of local out-growers and cooperatives to source raw seed material, providing reliable income streams to rural families. Furthermore, the company directly invests in local communities by maintaining water boreholes, supporting regional road infrastructure, and partnering with non-governmental organizations to deliver critical relief seeds to conflict-affected and remote areas across East Africa.
The comprehensive portfolio of agricultural products and specific commercial partnerships managed by the company includes:
  • Proprietary Hybrid Maize: Developed specifically to yield high protein content and maximize output under East African soil and climatic conditions.
  • Essential Field Crops: Comprises certified open-pollinated and hybrid varieties of upland rice, soya beans, beans, sorghum, groundnuts, and sunflowers.
  • Tropical Vegetable Seeds: Distributed via a strategic partnership as the official sole distributor of East-West Seed products in Uganda.
  • Commercial Horticultural Varieties: Includes high-yielding, disease-resistant seeds for high-demand vegetables such as cabbage, tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, and watermelons.
  • Agronomic Training Guides: Provides structured technical manuals and agricultural extension services to train smallholders on optimal crop management practices.
