Company Description
The Uganda Network on Law, Ethics and HIV/AIDS (UGANET) is a prominent national non-governmental organisation dedicated to social justice and human rights. Established in 1995 during the height of Uganda’s HIV/AIDS crisis, the organization was founded to unite individuals and institutions passionate about mitigating the legal and ethical challenges surrounding health. UGANET operates under the core belief that law, policy, and human rights are fundamental enablers for successful public health interventions.
The organisation’s central mandate focuses on advancing social and legal protections for highly vulnerable, marginalized, and excluded communities. While its foundational focus was addressing the deep-seated stigma, discrimination, and rights violations faced by people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), UGANET has significantly expanded its scope. Today, it actively tackles structural barriers related to tuberculosis (TB), malaria, gender inequality, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR).
Operationally, UGANET delivers on its mission through a specialized Legal Aid and Community Justice (LACJ) Department. As a certified legal aid service provider, the network offers free legal representation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and legal advice via its dedicated toll-free national hotline (0800 333 123). Its targeted initiatives extend directly into localized grassroots communities, shelter homes, and even state penitentiaries, where they run specialized health advocacy programs in collaboration with the Uganda Prisons Service.
Under its strategic pillars of Advocacy, Policy Influencing, and Strategic Litigation, UGANET works alongside public interest partners to challenge systemic barriers and reform laws that restrict equal access to justice. Headquartered in Kampala (Ministers Village, Ntinda) and guided by Executive Director Grace Nayiga, the organization maintains a strong regional footprint in districts such as Kasese and Tororo. By facilitating community-led dialogues and empowering locals to understand their constitutional health rights, UGANET plays a pivotal role in Uganda’s civic and healthcare landscape.
