Responsible For: Cold Chain Assistants

1. Job Purpose

To establish, install, maintain and monitor an efficient Cold Chain System to ensure the safe storage, handling and preservation of vaccines and other medicines in accordance with established standards and guidelines.

2. Key Outputs

• Cold Chain work plans and budgets prepared.
• Cold Chain maintenance activities monitored and evaluated.
• Refrigerators and other Cold Chain equipment installed, maintained and serviced.
• Cold Chain profile prepared and regularly updated.
• Equipment and allocated resources properly managed and accounted for.
• Research activities participated in.
• Periodic reports compiled and submitted.
• Immunization programmes supported and participated in.
• Functional Cold Chain systems established and maintained.
• Guidelines for the safe storage and handling of vaccines and other medicines enforced.
• Staff performance appraisals conducted.

3. Key Functions and Responsibilities

• Planning, budgeting, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating Cold Chain activities in Health Units.
• Installing, maintaining, servicing and repairing refrigerators and other Cold Chain equipment.
• Establishing and maintaining functional Cold Chain systems in Health Units to ensure the effective storage and preservation of vaccines and other temperature-sensitive medicines.
• Preparing, maintaining and regularly updating the Cold Chain profile.
• Monitoring the functionality and performance of Cold Chain equipment and taking appropriate action to address faults and breakdowns.
• Ensuring compliance with established guidelines and standards for the safe storage, handling and transportation of vaccines and other medicines.
• Requisitioning, receiving, managing and accounting for Cold Chain equipment, spare parts and other allocated resources.
• Ensuring the safe custody, proper use and functionality of all equipment under his or her responsibility.
• Participating in immunization programmes and providing technical support on Cold Chain management.
• Participating in research activities related to Cold Chain systems and immunization services.
• Compiling and submitting periodic technical and administrative reports.
• Supervising, coaching and mentoring Cold Chain Assistants to improve performance and service delivery.
• Conducting staff performance appraisals for supervised staff.
• Observing professional codes of conduct, ethics and established technical standards.
