Job Description
Job Title: Laboratory Technician
Reports to: Senior Analytical Chemist / Laboratory Supervisor
Area: Field laboratory
Location: Kampala, with rotation to Buliisa District
Travel Overseas training travel required
Job purpose
Reporting to the Senior Analytical Chemist or Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Technician performs the wet chemistry and sample-handling aspects of tracer sample analysis, using experience and knowledge of basic analytical chemistry techniques to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory and to meet client requirements.
Key responsibilities
• Work in accordance with company health and safety procedures so that laboratory operations are conducted safely.
• Working as part of a small team, ensure that sample pre-treatment prior to gas chromatography is performed rapidly, accurately and to a high standard.
• Conduct analysis of oil and water reservoir samples using the appropriate laboratory methods and GC-MS instrumentation.
• Check samples in accurately and promptly to the project data portal, assigning each a unique identifier and recording the sample description accurately.
• Work to the relevant laboratory quality standard, following the most recent procedure, analytical method or work instruction.
• Liaise with the Senior Analytical Chemist to ensure client requirements are understood and met in full and to the required timescale.
• Perform preventative maintenance checks on GC-MS and other laboratory equipment to ensure continuity of analytical service.
• Keep the laboratory organised and all documentation up to date.
• Take on any other duties within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Qualifications:
• Diploma or BSc in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Laboratory Technology or a related science.
• Hands-on experience as a laboratory technician or analyst in a working laboratory. Industrial training and internships served in a real testing laboratory count towards this.
• Working knowledge of wet chemistry principles — solution and reagent preparation, volumetric and gravimetric technique, analytical balance work.
• Broad general background knowledge across a range of analytical chemistry techniques.
• Experience with GC-MS is an advantage, not a requirement.
• Safety-conscious attitude.
• Computer literate — Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Willing to work an on-site rotation in Buliisa District, to travel overseas for training, and to work overtime when required.
