About the Role
Remote Sensing & GIS Specialist to lead geospatial analysis and monitoring for large-scale nature-based carbon projects (REDD+, reforestation, agroforestry) in Uganda. This role is pivotal in leveraging satellite imagery, drone data, and machine learning to track carbon stocks, deforestation trends, and project impacts. You will collaborate with forestry experts, carbon methodology teams, and local partners to ensure high-precision spatial data aligns with Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and MRV requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Process and analyze satellite imagery to assess land-use changes and carbon stocks.
2. Develop project baselines and carbon stock change models using IPCC-compliant methods.
3. Create high-resolution land-cover/land-use maps to support assessments.
4. Design and implement GIS-based monitoring systems for project validation and verification.
5. Integrate field data (forest inventories, ground-truthing) with remote sensing outputs.
6. Automate analysis pipelines using Python, R, or Google Earth Engine for efficient reporting.
7. Pilot drone-based surveys and AI/ML tools to enhance carbon stock estimations.
8. Stay updated on emerging remote sensing technologies (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, SAR).
9. Train field teams on mobile data collection tools (ODK, KoBoToolbox).
10. Support forestry and ecology specialists in spatial data interpretation.
Required Expertise & Qualifications
1. 5+ years of hands-on experience in remote sensing/GIS for environmental projects, preferably in forest carbon or conservation.
2. Advanced proficiency in:
- GIS software: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ENVI.
- Remote sensing platforms: Google Earth Engine, Sentinel Hub.
- Programming: Python (geopandas, rasterio), R, or JavaScript for GEE.
3. Experience with carbon project MRV frameworks (VCS, Gold Standard) is a plus.
Education & Certifications
1. Bachelors or Diploma in Geography, Environmental Science, Geomatics, or related fields.
2. Certifications in remote sensing (e.g., ESRI, ASPRS) or carbon mapping are advantageous.
3. Examples of portfolio documents (e.g., sample maps, GitHub repos, or project reports).
Required Competencies
1. Ensures precision in spatial data analysis and modeling.
2. Adapts new technologies to overcome data gaps.
3. Bridges technical and non-technical teams effectively.
4. Maintains meticulous documentation for audits.
