The Senior Planning Engineer is responsible for day- to- day operational planning activities to ensure the efficient and timely implementation of short- term Opex and E- Capex interventions. This role works closely with the engineering operations, and maintenance teams to assess, evaluate, and estimate costs for system improvements, upgrades, and network optimization in the short to medium term, while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is a limited liability company incorporated in Uganda under the Companies Act. UEDCL owns the 33KV and below voltage electricity distribution networks. The company sales and distributes electricity in Uganda as per ERA License issued on 31 December 2024 covering over 135 political districts, operates a modern pole plant at Lugogo, and executes key rural electrification schemes on behalf of the Government of Uganda.
Responsibilities or duties
- Prepare design solutions to enhance the performance of the network, including capacity upgrades, load balancing, and fault protection.
- Work closely with network design engineers, operations teams, and construction teams to ensure that all network changes are based on sound analytical studies.
- Provide guidance to junior engineers and planning staff on best practices for network analysis, optimization, and design.
- Ensure collaboration and communication between various departments involved in the design, maintenance, and upgrade of the network
- Ensure that all network operations and optimization activities comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and internal company policies.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
- Additional professional certifications in network analysis, power systems modeling, or related fields are desired but not required.
- Corporate member of UIPE and registered Engineer with ERB will be an added advantage
Experience needed
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in network design and planning in the electricity distribution industry.
- Extensive experience in power flow analysis and network optimization using software tools (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, Dig Silent Power Factory).
- Familiarity with electricity protection schemes, including short- circuit analysis, load flow, and relay coordination studies.
- Experience with designing and optimizing electricity systems to meet safety, efficiency, and reliability standards.

- Strong technical knowledge of electricity power systems, including distribution networks, transformers, and switchgear.
- In- depth understanding of root- cause analysis methods for the distribution systems operational constraints.
- Excellent problem- solving and analytical skills with the ability to identify issues and propose effective solutions.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical data in an understandable manner.
- Ability to work independently, manage projects, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to conduct thorough and accurate technical analysis.
