Company Description

Trees for the Future (TREES) is an international non-profit organization that has established a significant presence in Uganda, particularly in the Eastern and Central regions. Their mission centers on ending hunger and poverty while restoring degraded lands through a specialized agroforestry model known as the Forest Garden Approach. By working directly with smallholder farmers, the organization aims to transition traditional monocrop farming—which often exhausts the soil—into diverse, sustainable ecosystems that provide year-round food and income.
The Forest Garden Approach involves a four-year training program where farmers learn to plant thousands of trees alongside various food and cash crops. These gardens are designed with “living fences” of thorny or thick-growing trees to protect the interior from livestock and wind, while nitrogen-fixing trees are used to naturally fertilize the soil. This method significantly increases the biodiversity of the farmland and helps sequester carbon, making it a critical tool for climate change adaptation in rural Ugandan communities.
In Uganda, the organization has achieved notable success in districts such as Iganga, Namutumba, and Bugiri. As of early 2026, they have helped thousands of Ugandan families plant millions of trees, effectively creating “green walls” across formerly barren landscapes. Beyond the environmental impact, the program emphasizes economic empowerment by teaching farmers how to manage their gardens as businesses, ensuring they have a surplus of fruits, vegetables, and timber to sell in local markets throughout the year.
  • Forest Garden Training: Providing a structured, multi-year curriculum that guides farmers through the phases of site stabilization, diversification, and optimization.
  • Seedling Provision: Distributing millions of high-quality seeds and seedlings for fruit, fodder, timber, and nitrogen-fixing tree species.
  • Sustainable Livelihoods: Helping farmers diversify their income streams so they are no longer dependent on a single seasonal harvest.
  • Land Restoration: Reclaiming degraded agricultural land by improving soil structure and water retention through permanent tree cover.
  • Capacity Building: Training local lead farmers to become extension agents who can continue teaching agroforestry techniques within their own villages.
