POSITION SUMMARY

The Biology/Chemistry Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Biology and Chemistry to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum.

The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with scientific inquiry, laboratory, and analytical skills needed for academic advancement and future careers in the sciences.

The Biology/Chemistry Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ confidence in STEM subjects within a Christ-centered learning environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum Delivery & Instruction

• Plan, prepare, and deliver Biology and Chemistry lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus requirements.
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong conceptual understanding of biological processes, chemical principles, and scientific reasoning.
• Use varied teaching methods, demonstrations, models, and inquiry-based activities to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels.
• Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
• Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support where needed.
• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.
• Integrate cross-cutting issues such as HIV/AIDS education, environmental conservation, and health awareness into Biology lessons as guided by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES).

Practical & Laboratory Instruction

• Plan and supervise Biology and Chemistry practical lessons and experiments in the school laboratory, in line with UNEB practical examination requirements.
• Guide students in the safe and correct use of laboratory apparatus, chemicals, specimens, and equipment.
• Prepare and preserve biological specimens, reagents, and solutions required for practical lessons and examinations.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, chemicals, and resources, and coordinate with school administration on procurement and safe storage of supplies.
• Ensure strict health, safety, and chemical-handling standards are observed during all practical and laboratory-based activities, including proper disposal of hazardous waste.
• Organize demonstrations, science fairs, field trips, or STEM-related activities that reinforce classroom learning with real-world application.

Student Guidance & Mentorship

• Mentor students interested in STEM-related career paths, including further studies in medicine, nursing, biological sciences, chemistry, and allied health fields.
• Encourage participation in science clubs, competitions, quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
• Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Biology or Chemistry concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
• Model discipline, curiosity, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence in STEM subjects and Christian values.

Resource & Records Management

• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment in line with school policy.
• Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for textbooks, laboratory chemicals, specimens, and teaching aids.
• Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control, including an updated chemical/reagent inventory, of laboratory equipment, textbooks, and instructional materials.
• Maintain an up-to-date register of hazardous chemicals and ensure compliance with safe storage and handling guidelines.

Teamwork & Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning.
• Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
• Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities related to agriculture, health, and environmental stewardship.
• Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ practical science learning where appropriate.

Other Duties

• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with Biology and Chemistry as teaching subjects, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Biology and/or Chemistry.
• Sound knowledge of the national secondary Biology and Chemistry curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
• Practical experience conducting Biology and Chemistry laboratory demonstrations and experiments.
• Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable, e.g., valid Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.

• Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down complex or abstract concepts for learners at different levels.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, balancing lesson planning, marking, and practical sessions.

• High level of integrity, responsibility, and accountability for school resources, especially laboratory chemicals and equipment.
• Collaborative team player who contributes positively to the wider school community.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

• Strong command of Biology and Chemistry subject content across the secondary curriculum.
• Skilled in practical/laboratory instruction, demonstration techniques, and experiment supervision, including safe chemical handling.
• Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping.
• Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and delivery.
• Capable of maintaining a safe, organized, and functional laboratory environment.
