PHYSICS/MATHEMATICS TEACHER – AsOne HIGH SCHOOL

Location: Luuka / Serere Community, Uganda
Department: Education
Reports To: Director of Studies
Status: Full-Time
Start Date: January 2027
Number of Positions: 1 for each community (2)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Physics/Mathematics Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Physics and Mathematics to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with the scientific reasoning, numeracy, and problem-solving skills needed for academic advancement and future careers.

The Physics/Mathematics Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ confidence in STEM subjects within a Christ-centered learning environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Curriculum Delivery & Instruction

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver Physics and Mathematics lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and syllabus requirements.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes.
  • Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong conceptual understanding of physical principles and mathematical reasoning.
  • Use varied teaching methods, demonstrations, and problem-solving activities to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels.
  • Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support where needed.
  • Prepare students for national and internal examinations, ensuring syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.

2. Practical & Laboratory Instruction

  • Plan and supervise Physics practical lessons and experiments in the school laboratory.
  • Guide students in the safe and correct use of laboratory apparatus, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and resources, and coordinate with school administration on procurement of supplies.
  • Ensure health and safety standards are observed during all practical and laboratory-based activities.
  • Organize demonstrations, science fairs, or STEM-related activities that reinforce classroom learning with real-world application.

3. Student Guidance & Mentorship

  • Mentor students interested in STEM-related career paths, including further studies in science, engineering, and technical fields.
  • Encourage participation in science and mathematics clubs, competitions, quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
  • Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Physics or Mathematics concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
  • Model discipline, curiosity, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence in STEM subjects.

4. Resource & Records Management

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment in line with school policy.
  • Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for textbooks, laboratory materials, and teaching aids.
  • Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of laboratory equipment, textbooks, and instructional materials.

5. Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
  • Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities related to agriculture and environmental stewardship.
  • Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ practical agricultural learning where appropriate.

6. Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with Physics and Mathematics as teaching subjects, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Physics and/or Mathematics.
  • Sound knowledge of the national secondary Physics and Mathematics curriculum and Ministry of Education guidelines.
  • Practical experience conducting Physics laboratory demonstrations and experiments.
  • A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.

BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES

  • Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in science and mathematics.
  • Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down complex or abstract concepts for learners at different levels.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, balancing lesson planning, marking, and practical sessions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and parents.
  • High level of integrity, responsibility, and accountability for school resources.
  • Collaborative team player who contributes positively to the wider school community.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Strong command of Physics and Mathematics subject content across the secondary curriculum.
  • Skilled in practical/laboratory instruction, demonstration techniques, and experiment supervision.
  • Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping.
  • Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and delivery.
  • Capable of maintaining a safe, organized, and functional laboratory environment.
