Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of Germany’s largest independent non-governmental organizations, dedicated to a vision of a world without hunger or poverty. Established in 1962, the organization has been operational in Uganda since 1986, working to transform lives through a “help for self-help” approach. Its primary mission in the country focuses on ensuring sustainable food and nutrition security, while also promoting the fundamental right to a self-determined life in dignity and justice for all Ugandans.
The organization implements a diverse range of integrated programs across five key regions: West Nile, Karamoja, Teso, Central, and Western Uganda. These initiatives prioritize youth skills development, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and the empowerment of women to address gender-based violence and promote equality. By partnering with the Ugandan government and local civil society, WHH provides technical and financial support for projects like “GET Skilled,” which equips young people in urban and rural areas with vocational expertise in trades such as motorcycle repair, tailoring, and green energy.
Beyond long-term development, Welthungerhilfe is a critical actor in humanitarian assistance, specifically supporting refugees and host communities in districts like Yumbe and Arua. Their “Grow Together” and “Community Voices” projects focus on building resilience through climate-smart agriculture, maternal health nutrition, and the rehabilitation of vital water infrastructure. Through these multifaceted efforts, the organization aims to achieve its global “Zero Hunger” target by 2030, ensuring that even the most marginalized populations have the tools to secure their own nutrition and future.
