Position Summary

The Fine Art Teacher will deliver high-quality, engaging instruction in Fine Art to secondary school students. The role focuses on developing students’ skills in drawing, painting, design, lettering, craft, and 3D work while nurturing creativity, critical thinking, self-expression, and practical skills for future careers and sustainable livelihoods.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Delivery & Instruction

  • Plan and deliver Fine Art lessons according to the national curriculum and UNEB syllabus requirements.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules.
  • Teach drawing, painting, design, lettering, 3D work, art history, theory, and criticism.
  • Use demonstrations and hands-on studio practice to support different learning abilities.
  • Set, administer, mark, and provide feedback on tests, practical assignments, portfolios, and examinations.
  • Monitor learner progress and provide remedial support where necessary.
  • Prepare students for UCE/UACE practical examinations and coursework/portfolio submissions.
  • Teach local and international art forms, design principles, and craft techniques relevant to Uganda.
  • Promote creativity, cultural heritage, and entrepreneurial applications of art and craft.

Practical & Studio Instruction

  • Plan and supervise practical art, studio, and craft sessions.
  • Teach students the safe use of art tools, materials, paints, cutting equipment, and kilns/ovens where applicable.
  • Maintain the art studio, equipment, and materials.
  • Coordinate procurement of art supplies with school administration.
  • Ensure health and safety standards during practical activities.
  • Organize art exhibitions, craft fairs, school decoration projects, and cultural/creative activities.

Student Guidance & Mentorship

  • Mentor students interested in Fine Art, design, architecture, graphic design, and creative industries.
  • Encourage participation in art clubs, competitions, exhibitions, and showcases.
  • Support learners struggling with Fine Art concepts and techniques.
  • Model discipline, creativity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Help students develop marketable art and craft skills that can contribute to sustainable livelihoods and enterprise.

Resource & Records Management

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, performance, continuous assessment, and portfolio work.
  • Support budgeting and procurement of art materials, tools, textbooks, and teaching aids.
  • Maintain proper care and stock control of art tools, materials, portfolios, and instructional resources.
  • Maintain past papers, sample portfolios, and revision materials.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Director of Studies and other teachers.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school activities.
  • Support art clubs, cultural days, and creative/enterprise projects.
  • Engage parents and the community in supporting practical art and craft learning.
  • Where appropriate, connect students with local artisans and craft markets.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education with Fine Art as a teaching subject, or a related field such as Art and Design or Industrial Fine Art.
  • Minimum 2 years’ secondary school teaching experience, preferably in Fine Art.
  • Sound knowledge of the national secondary Fine Art curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
  • Demonstrated practical skills in drawing, painting, design, craft, and 3D techniques.
  • Relevant teaching registration/licensing where applicable.
  • Demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.
