Position Summary

The Swahili Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Kiswahili to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum.

The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Kiswahili, as well as an appreciation of East African language and culture needed for academic advancement, regional communication, and future careers.

The Swahili Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ confidence in Kiswahili within a Christ-centered learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Delivery & Instruction

• Plan, prepare, and deliver Kiswahili lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus requirements.
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, composition (insha), and oral communication skills in Kiswahili.
• Use varied teaching methods, including guided reading, role-play, songs, dialogue practice, and discussion-based analysis of set texts and oral literature.
• Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, compositions, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback.
• Track learner performance and progress, identifying learning gaps and providing remedial support where needed.
• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.
• Guide students in the study of prescribed Kiswahili set texts, including novels, plays, poetry, proverbs, and oral traditions relevant to East African culture.
• Integrate regional integration awareness, East African culture, and communication skills relevant to everyday and cross-border life, in line with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) guidelines.

Language Skills Development

• Organize and supervise oral practice sessions, vocabulary drills, and public speaking or debate sessions in Kiswahili.
• Guide students in the correct use of Kiswahili grammar, sentence structure, comprehension techniques, and composition/essay writing.
• Facilitate appreciation of Kiswahili literature and oral traditions through class readings, drama performances, poetry recitals, and language clubs.
• Coordinate with school administration on the procurement of Kiswahili textbooks, readers, dictionaries, and other language resource materials.
• Organize Kiswahili debates, drama festivals, cultural days, and language competitions that reinforce classroom learning through real-world application.

Student Guidance & Mentorship

• Mentor students interested in language, translation, regional trade, diplomacy, communication-related careers, and further studies.
• Encourage participation in Kiswahili clubs, debate clubs, drama clubs, competitions, quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
• Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Kiswahili concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
• Model discipline, clear communication, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence in language learning and reflects Christian values.

Resource & Records Management

• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment in line with school policy.
• Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for Kiswahili textbooks, set texts, dictionaries, and teaching aids.
• Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of textbooks, set texts, and instructional materials.
• Maintain an organized bank of past papers, model compositions, and revision aids to support examination preparation.

Teamwork & Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning.
• Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
• Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities such as language clubs, cultural days, drama, and debate programs.
• Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ language learning and appreciation of Kiswahili culture where appropriate.

Other Duties

• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with Kiswahili as a teaching subject, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Kiswahili.
• Sound knowledge of the national secondary Kiswahili curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
• Strong command of Kiswahili grammar, composition, comprehension, and literary analysis techniques.
• Fluency in spoken and written Kiswahili, with the ability to teach effectively at all secondary levels.
• Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable, including valid teaching practice certification/registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
• Demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.

Technical Competencies

• Strong command of Kiswahili language and literature content across the secondary curriculum.
• Skilled in composition marking, oral literature instruction, and facilitating debate, drama, and oral presentation activities in Kiswahili.
• Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping.
• Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and delivery.
• Ability to foster a culture of language appreciation and confident oral communication among learners.
