School Nurse – AsOne High School

Location: Luuka / Serere / Namutumba Communities, Uganda
Department: Education
Reports To: Deputy HeadTeacher
Status: Full-Time
Start Date: January 2027
Number of Positions: 1 for each community (3 positions)

About the Role

The School Nurse will be responsible for promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing of students and staff. The role involves providing first aid and basic clinical care, managing the school sick bay, promoting health and hygiene, maintaining health records, supporting disease prevention, and responding to medical emergencies.

The successful candidate will work closely with school leadership, teachers, parents, local health facilities, and health authorities to create a safe and healthy learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide first aid and basic emergency care to students and staff.
  • Assess common illnesses and injuries and refer serious cases to health facilities.
  • Administer prescribed medication according to school policies and parental consent.
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked and organized school clinic or sick bay.
  • Conduct routine health screenings and monitor students’ health.
  • Provide health education on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, adolescent health, HIV/AIDS prevention, and substance abuse.
  • Promote handwashing, menstrual hygiene, sanitation, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Support immunization, deworming, malaria prevention, and other public health programs.
  • Monitor and help prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Maintain confidential and accurate student health records.
  • Prepare health reports and document clinic visits, referrals, and treatments.
  • Provide basic psychosocial support and refer students who require additional assistance.
  • Support students with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or special health needs.
  • Inspect sanitation facilities, water sources, kitchens, dining areas, and dormitories where applicable.
  • Advise school leadership on health, safety, water, sanitation, and hygiene improvements.
  • Maintain proper stock control and expiry monitoring of medicines and medical supplies.
  • Work with local health centers, district health officers, parents, and the wider community.
  • Participate in staff meetings, school events, and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Perform other duties assigned by school leadership.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Nursing Sciences, Clinical Medicine, or a related health field from a recognized institution.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC).
  • At least 2 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in pediatric, adolescent, or school health.
  • Knowledge of Uganda Ministry of Health protocols and school health guidelines.
  • Valid First Aid and Basic Life Support/CPR certification.
  • Strong knowledge of preventive healthcare and disease control.
  • Personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered service.
