Location: Luuka / Serere Community, Uganda
Department: Education
Reports To: Director of Studies
Status: Full-Time
Start Date: January 2027
Number of Positions: 1 for each community (2)

Position Summary
The English/Literature Teacher will deliver high-quality instruction in English Language and Literature in English to secondary school students. The teacher will develop learners’ reading, writing, comprehension, oral communication, grammar, and literary analysis skills while working within a Christ-centered learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver English and Literature lessons according to the national curriculum and UNEB requirements.
  • Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, assessments, and examination schedules.
  • Teach grammar, composition, comprehension, oral communication, and literary analysis.
  • Use guided reading, creative writing, debates, drama, discussions, and analysis of set texts.
  • Set, administer, mark, and provide feedback on tests, assignments, essays, and examinations.
  • Monitor learner performance and provide remedial support where necessary.
  • Prepare students for UCE/UACE and internal examinations.
  • Teach prescribed novels, plays, poetry, short stories, oral literature, and functional/creative writing.
  • Organize reading programmes, spelling and vocabulary activities, debates, drama, public speaking, and writing clubs.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment records.
  • Support procurement and proper management of textbooks, set texts, readers, dictionaries, and teaching materials.
  • Mentor students interested in careers in language, communication, media, law, and literature.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, school activities, and co-curricular programmes.
  • Work with parents and the community to promote reading and language development.
  • Perform other duties assigned by school leadership.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with English Language and Literature in English as teaching subjects, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ secondary school teaching experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the national English Language and Literature curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
  • Strong command of grammar, composition, comprehension, and literary analysis.
  • Relevant teaching registration/licensing where applicable.
  • Demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.
