Job Description

Mechanical Engineer

Number of Vacancies: One (1)
Department: Operations
Reports to: Senior Building Services Engineer

Job Purpose

Responsible for contributing to the attainment of NHCCL strategic objectives and goals by ensuring that all project site mechanical works and related services are competently designed, properly planned, and executed according to professional standards, specifications, established procedures, and best practices while maintaining risk management, compliance, and engineering integrity.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Mechanical Design

  • Undertake mechanical designs from concept stage through to project completion.
  • Ensure designs meet project requirements and engineering standards.

Design and Specification Compliance

  • Ensure mechanical designs are implemented according to approved specifications.
  • Ensure proper use and safety of tools and equipment during project execution.

Workmanship and Quality Assurance

  • Ensure proper mechanical workmanship at construction sites.
  • Monitor adherence to approved mechanical designs and specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards and safe work practices.

Supervision and Inspection

  • Supervise and inspect all mechanical works at company project sites and properties.
  • Guide staff and contractors to ensure mechanical works are properly executed and maintained.
  • Monitor critical stages of construction and provide timely technical guidance.
  • Measure contractors’ completed work for certification and payment purposes.

Material Management

  • Ensure timely requisition of mechanical materials from stores.
  • Minimize wastage and ensure efficient utilization of resources.

Quality Control

  • Review:
    • Material test reports
    • Samples
    • Manufacturers’ test certificates
  • Report compliance findings to Project Managers.

Technical Advisory

  • Provide management with specialist technical advice on mechanical engineering matters.
  • Support project planning and investment decisions through technical recommendations.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce health and safety requirements at project sites.
  • Ensure safe working conditions and compliance with regulatory standards.

Reporting

  • Prepare timely and accurate reports relating to:
    • Mechanical designs
    • Site works
    • Project implementation
    • Outsourced mechanical services
    • Spare parts and maintenance requirements

Team Leadership

  • Take responsibility for:
    • Recruitment
    • Staff development
    • Performance management
    • Remuneration and rewards
    • Career development
    • Coaching and mentoring
    • Employee engagement
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in:

    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Building Services Engineering
    • Or a closely related discipline

    from a recognized university.

  • Master’s Degree in any of the above fields is desirable.
  • Membership in a nationally or internationally recognized professional engineering body such as:

    • Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (MUIPE)
    • Or equivalent professional body

    is an added advantage.

  • Specialized training in Project Planning and Management from a recognized institution is desirable.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience as:

    • Mechanical Officer
    • Mechanical Engineer
    • Or a similar position

    in a reputable:

    • Construction company
    • Civil works company
    • Consultancy firm
    • Large infrastructure project
  • Experience in housing-related projects within public or private sector organizations is desirable.
  • Proven experience in housing or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Proven proficiency in:
    • AutoCAD
    • Revit
    • ArchCAD
    • Other relevant engineering design software
